Page - Replacement of Missing Teeth
Whether a tooth has been lost recently or been missing for many years, there are numerous options to replace missing teeth.
In the past, dentures (false teeth) were the most common way to replace missing teeth. In recent years dentures are being utilised less and less as more comfortable and secure alternatives have evolved.
Common problems associated with dentures include:
Sore spots/ulcers from a denture rubbing on the gums
Movement during chewing and speech
Fracture of the plastic teeth or plastic base
Unable to wear the denture due to strong gag reflex
Bad smell or odor, if not properly cleaned
Altered taste sensation
Altered speech
Bridges connect to the adjacent teeth to replace the missing tooth or teeth. There are conservative resin bonded (Maryland bridges) or traditional porcelain bridges which rely on crowns on the adjacent teeth to secure the bridge.
Dental implants are the other alternative to replacing missing teeth.
There are 3 main advantages of a dental implant over a bridge:
The adjacent teeth are left alone
Longevity and predictability
Better success rate
